Four Classrooms in Ukambani, Kenya
Developed in partnership with Engineers Without Borders USA, these four classrooms are located in Usalama, a small community in Ukambani, Kenya.
Part of a larger master plan established by Usalama Primary School leadership, this project sought to expand the capacity of the existing school in response to a steadily growing number of pupils. The finalized design employed confined masonry construction and locally fabricated brick. The interstitial spaces between classrooms encourage outdoor learning, socializing and play.
Within two years of the completion of these projects in 2010, school attendance had increased and the average student test score had gone up by 15%. The school had also been provided additional teachers to serve the growing number of students and had received numerous awards from the local government.
This project was made possible by the Generous Gift of Mwikali’s Gift.
