Public Space in Kibera, Nairobi:
" Site 06"
This project was initiated by the residents of Silanga village in Kibera, Nairobi. Through a lengthy community-driven process, the site for a new public sanitation block was identified, designed, and constructed along the Nairobi Dam Basin on the Eastern edge of the settlement.
The demand for a sanitation block was clear, as there was no other facility within many blocks of the site. Due to seasonal flooding risk and the low lieing terrain, a septic system nor a connection to municipal sewer systems were an option. Together with community leaders, we developed compost toilet program, design, and business model to provide sanitation services and for process into a compost product.
This project is part of Kounkuey Design Initiative’s Productive Public Space Project.
