Submitted for the Ideation Worldwide competition in 2017, this proposal illustrated a vision for a market in Kakuma Refugee Camp in Northern Kenya. The intervention took on a physical form as a flexible public space located in the camp; an economic structure through a strategy of investments, grants and vouchers; and a legal framework that encouraged formalization of existing black market supply chains stretching to Nairobi.

 

The design strategies put forward in this proposal were informed by previous interventions conducted by the Danish Refugee Council, statistical data provided by Kimetrica, and in-person interviews with former residents of Kakuma.
