Public Playspace in Kibera, Nairobi

This project was initiated by the residents of Laini Saba village in Kibera, Nairobi.  Built upon an existing playground site, the new play structure had to be constructed rapidly as it was located in the most densely populated portion of the settlement.

After securing design approvals from community leaders, local residents, parents, and the children themselves, the playground was built over the course of two weeks from reclaimed automobile tires, water pipes, and recycled play elements from other disassembled play structures.

This project is part of Kounkuey Design Initiative’s Productive Public Space Project.
